Hey Loves! ✨
Today, we’re diving into one of my absolute favorite topics—self-care. In the whirlwind of work, family, fitness, and life in general, it’s all too easy to put ourselves last. But let me tell you something I’ve learned (sometimes the hard way): taking time for self-care isn’t just a nice-to-have; it’s absolutely essential. It’s the secret to staying balanced, energized, and happy. Let’s chat about some of my favorite self-care practices—from skincare routines to journaling—and how they’ve helped me navigate the chaos of life.
Skincare: Nourish Your Skin, Nourish Your Soul
Growing up in Sweden, I’ve always valued simplicity, especially when it comes to beauty routines. My mum used to hand me a bottle of cold-pressed rosehip oil every winter and say, “Keep your skin happy, and it’ll thank you.” Those words stuck, and over the years, skincare has become a ritual—a little slice of calm amidst the noise.
Morning Ritual:
Start your day with a gentle cleanse to remove any overnight impurities. Follow it up with a hydrating toner, a vitamin C serum to brighten your complexion, and finish with a lightweight SPF moisturizer. Think of this as your armor against the day ahead.
Evening Indulgence:
In the evenings, I go all out. Double cleansing to melt away the day’s grime, layering on a nourishing serum, and sealing it with a rich moisturizer. Some nights, I’ll throw on a sheet mask and sip chamomile tea while catching up on my favorite series. Bliss.
Weekly Treats:
Once or twice a week, I indulge in an exfoliating scrub or a detoxifying clay mask. It’s my way of hitting the reset button for my skin and my mood.
Mindful Movement: Connect with Your Body
When I first moved to the UK and started building my PT career, I learned that exercise is as much about mental clarity as it is about physical fitness. Movement can be a form of self-care if approached mindfully.
Yoga:
Yoga has been my go-to for reconnecting with my body. A gentle flow in the morning helps me start the day with intention, while an evening Yin session melts away any tension. Plus, there’s nothing like the feeling of nailing a pose you’ve been working on for weeks.
Walking:
One of my favorite memories is from Dubai, where I’d take long walks on the beach at sunset. Now, in London, I’ve swapped sandy shores for lush parks, but the principle remains the same: walking clears my head and fills my cup.
Stretching:
Stretching doesn’t just feel good; it’s a way to check in with your body. Whether it’s a five-minute stretch after a workout or a full-on session while the boys build pillow forts, it’s always worth it.
Meditation: Calm Your Mind, Center Your Thoughts
When I first tried meditation, I thought, “This is impossible”—I couldn’t quiet my mind for even a second. But with practice (and a lot of trial and error), it’s become a cornerstone of my self-care routine.
Start Small:
Begin with just five minutes a day. Find a quiet spot, close your eyes, and focus on your breath. Some days are easier than others, but that’s part of the journey.
Guided Meditations:
Apps like Calm or Headspace have been lifesavers for me. A soothing voice guiding me through the process? Yes, please.
Create Your Sanctuary:
I’ve carved out a little corner in my bedroom—just a cushion, a candle, and a small plant—as my meditation nook. It’s nothing fancy, but it’s my space to breathe and reset.
Journaling: Reflect and Release
Journaling has been a game-changer for me, especially during those chaotic early days of motherhood. Writing things down helps me process emotions, reflect on the day, and set intentions for the future.
Gratitude Journaling:
Every night, I jot down three things I’m grateful for. Some days, it’s as simple as “Leo’s cheeky grin” or “a really good flat white.” Other days, it’s deeper. Either way, it shifts my focus to the positives.
Free Writing:
Sometimes, I set a timer for ten minutes and let my thoughts spill onto the page. It’s cathartic and often reveals things I didn’t even realize were on my mind.
Nourishment: Fuel Your Body with Love
Food is fuel, but it’s also comfort, connection, and care. Growing up, Sundays in my house meant cinnamon buns and strong coffee. Now, I balance those indulgent moments with nourishing meals that keep me energized.
Whole Foods:
I focus on fresh, unprocessed foods—colorful veggies, lean proteins, and whole grains. It’s not about restriction; it’s about balance.
Mindful Eating:
I try to eat without distractions (though let’s be honest, with two boys, that’s not always possible). But when I can, I savor each bite, appreciating the flavors and textures.
Hydration:
Keeping a water bottle nearby is my hack for staying hydrated. Add a slice of lemon or cucumber for a little flair, and you’re good to go.
Digital Detox: Unplug and Recharge
Living in a hyper-connected world, I’ve found that stepping away from screens is one of the most liberating forms of self-care.
Set Boundaries:
No phones at the dinner table and a strict no-screen rule an hour before bed. It’s made such a difference in my sleep quality and overall mental clarity.
Tech-Free Days:
Every so often, I’ll designate a “no tech” Sunday. Instead of scrolling, I’ll read, bake, or head out for a family adventure.
Engage Offline:
Rediscovering hobbies like painting or baking during lockdown reminded me how fulfilling offline activities can be. Plus, it’s fun to create without worrying about capturing the perfect Instagram shot.
Final Thoughts: Make Self-Care a Priority
Self-care isn’t selfish; it’s essential. By taking the time to nurture yourself—mind, body, and soul—you’re better equipped to handle life’s challenges and show up for those around you. Start small, find what works for you, and remember: every little bit counts.
So here’s your permission slip, loves—take that bubble bath, go for that walk, or spend an extra five minutes massaging in your moisturizer.
You’re worth it. 🌿❤️
